What is Intuitive Eating?

Updated: Apr 24

Intuitive Eating has become more and more popular over the last few years (yay yay yay!!) but as with everything, its growth has caused a ton of misinformation to be spread. Intuitive Eating or IE is more than just honoring your hunger cues or eating whatever you want when you want it. It has set principles and complex skills that need to be relearned and developed in order to gain true food freedom and listen fully to your body in all aspects of your life. That is where going on this journey with an IE-focused dietitian is super beneficial. Our job is to evaluate where you are, meet you there, and help break down the ingrained barriers of diet culture with pure science (and love.)

The Intuitive Eating movement was really started by two dietitians; Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, Fiaedp, FADA, FAND. Their book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works is basically the end-all-be-all of the IE community. It not only runs through all ten principles in detail, providing real examples and research, it also is extremely engaging. I strongly recommend anyone wanted a more in-depth look into IE to pick up a copy.

So what is intuitive eating? To keep it short and simple, it’s reconnecting with your innate ability to feed and fuel your body with love for yourself and without judgement.

We are all born knowing how to eat. Not just the mechanics, but how to eat a balanced diet complete with all the macro and micro-nutrients required to keep you well-nourished at your body’s natural weight. Our society has created an entire industry based on unteaching this innate skill and replacing it with fad diets, products, and diet programs. We’re continuously taught not to trust our bodies and instead listen to complete strangers telling us to follow a specific meal plan to achieve a body worthy of love. Intuitive Eating moves to discard diet culture and regain trust in ourselves to best feed and move our bodies. You are the expert of your own body.

Ten principles guide you through the journey of IE

  1. Reject the diet mentality

  2. Honor your hunger

  3. Make peace with food

  4. Challenge the food police

  5. Discover the satisfaction factor

  6. Feel your fullness

  7. Cope with Emotions with Kindness

  8. Respect your body

  9. Joyful Movement

  10. Honor your health-Gentle Nutrition

It's a complicated process to relearn these skills but the freedom that comes along with intuitive eating is amazing!
